The Joplin Globe’s Update Edition—Section 2—Page 6SchifferdeckerRemodeling fourth hole tops list of projectsBy Jim HenryGlobe Sports WriterRemodeling on the fourth hole and the addition of the Joplin Golf Hall of Fame in the clubhouse are two new looks this year at the Schifferdecker Municipal golf course.Work on No. 4, a par-3, is under way, and the project consists of leveling and enlarging the green and patchwork in the fairway.“We’ve had quite a few complaints, said Don Greenlee, the greens superintendent. “Our greens out here are small. No. 4 is 3,200 square feet, and it should be 5,000 square feet. And the right front sloped so much, you couldn’t hardly use it. You have to use it some, or the rest of the green will get wore down. But when we put the cup over there (right side), everyone complains.”The remodeling, expected to last 4-6 weeks, reduces the course to 17 holes, with golfers going from the No. 3 green to the No. 5 tee. “Our goal (for completion) is May 1 if we don't have much bad weather,” Greenlee said.CXher rebuilding projects are planned.“There are five more tees to rebuild and enlarge.” Greenlee said. “We’ve done the other tees during the past five years.“Last vear we wanted to do more.but we had too much of a growing season. I don’t want a drought, but we were kept busy mowing. In late July and August is when you usually have some extra time for construction. but when you’re mowing all the time, you can’t let four or five guys off that (mowing) to build.”Greenlee has been the greens superintendent for 13 years and has a staff of three full-time workers and five part-timers during the summer. Their summer schedule includes cutting the greens five or six days a week, moving the cups six times a week and mowing the fairways two or three times a week, depending on the weather. It takes an average of 10 hours to mow the fairways “if we get a good start ahead of the morning golfers,” Greenlee said. The Joplin Golf Hall of Fame, formed just last year, has moved its memorabilia from Twin Hills Golf and Country Club to the Schifferdecker clubhouse.“We wanted to move it out there so the public will have better access to it,” said Wendell Redden, one of the shrine's directors. “This will be a temporary residence. Hopefully in time, we want to build a junior golf course that will have a museum so the golf memorabilia can be included.Twelve inductees were enshrinedSee Hall, Page 11A workman begins rebuilding the fourth green at Schifferdeck- fairway is expected to be completed by May 1, weather per-er Municipal Golf Course.
