Celebrationpreparationsmove aheadAn official emblem for the 125th Ottumwa Territorial Celebration has been adopted by the observance committtee for use on various souvenirs, window stickers and other materialsthat will be used throughout the entire five-month celebration.The emblem, features a picture of Chief Wapello in the center with the words, “Territorial Celebration, Ottumwa,1843-1968” around it.Executive director Joe Galvan also stated that a few items, such as bumper stickers, window stickers, coffee mugs and commemorative plates, with a brief resume of the “New Pur-lt;chase” on the back are now on sale at the Chamber of Commerce Office.Plans for opening day ceremonies, under the direction of Martin Carlson, which will takeplace May 1 were also an- I nounced. The event will begin i at 12 noon in Central Park with(mayors from the 11-county area that comprise the New Purchase (Davis, Appanoose, Wapello, Monroe, Keokuk, Mahaska, Iowa, Poweshiek, Benton,Tama and Blackhawk), in attendance along with other dignitaries. Following the official ceremony, which will include a fly-over by the Iowa Air National Guard, an air drop of ping pong balls, with various prizes for youngsters, whistles, sirens and church bells sounding, and the releasing of helium-filled balloons, a luncheon will be4(t(11held at Ottumwa Country Club.The opening day event is the first of eight scheduled events that will celebrate the opening of this territory to white settlers in 1843.IiGalvan explained that although committees have been established, anyone wishing toparticipate in any phase of thelt;i(
