Mary M. VarnellThe funeral for Mary Massey Varnell, 84, of Athens was at 2 p.m. Monday at Limestone Chapel Funeral home with Warren Glass and Don Osborne officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery in Athens.Mrs. Varnell died Saturday, March 22, 2008, at home.Mrs. Varnell worked for 30 years with the ASCS office in LimestoneCounty. After her retirement she was a volunteer for many years with the Athens-Liinestone Hospital Auxiliary. She also volunteered with RSVP, theKidney Association, AARP, and helped to hold elections. She was known for her sourdough bread, cookies. cakes and teacakes.She was preceded in death by her parents, Lessie Courtney Massey and Alice Frances Brooks Massey; brothers W.S. Massey, Braden Massey, and Courtney Massey; and sister Frances Mauvaleen Mclnturff.She is survived by her husband of 02 years, Fred Vamdll of Athens; one son, Charles Varnell and wife Patti ofPowdersprings, Ga.; one daughter, Gisele Rudder and husband Mike, of Florence; grandchildren, Allison Varnell. Brent Rudder, and Brad Rudder; two great-grandchildren, Madeline and Benjamin Rudder; one sister-in-law, Dean Massey; two nieces, Jerrie Smith and Kellie Broadway; two nephews, Courtney and Aaron Mclnturff; and several great-nieces and nephews.Pallbearers will be Barry Smith.Monroe Broadway, Paul and Sylvia Ridgeway, Brent Rudder, Courtney Mclnturff, and Aaron Mclnturff.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to Hospice of Limestone County. The familywould like to thank all of her friendsfor the support they have given.
