March 15,1 9*A cble Life tndtd.The last sad tites weie paid to the nemory of Thomas Coulter, at his resi-ience in Milford township, yesterday at-ernooa at 12:80 o'clock, after which the remains of our old friend were laid away ;o rest, in our beautiful cemetery.The deceased was torn in the county of Pyroae, Ireland, on the 10* h day of March, 1815, ind dltd March 18, 1894, of ld age and general dkbiUty, He was ne of the four sons tf Thomas Coulter, :he pioneer and principal representative of the family in this country, who was born in the ;county of Tyrone, Ireland, on the 12th of September, 1785, and w«s married there to Isabella Clecdtnn-ing and remained In the country until the year 1818, when he with bis wife and family, emigrated to the United States, by way of Quebec, and after a perilous journey of six months by land and water Bnalty located in Pennsylvania, near Pittsburg and commejuced farming.After a residence of seven years in that state, he moved to Ohio and settled oear Hamilton, Herenra md therewith his family seven years, then bought and moved on a farm near this village and lived on the same till near his death, which took place on the 5th day of May, 1872, his wife having idled on the 14th day of April, 1865,His sou, Thomas, the subject of our sketch, and four daughters all married and settled near the old homestead, so close that their parents often .said they could ylsit them In one day.The earliest tradition'we have of the Coulter family extends back to about the close of the seventeenth century, at which time they were residents of Scotland, one being a minister of the Estab llsbed church, who, from conscientious scruples, refused to pray for the king (presumably James II) t-s was then and still is, customary, if not obligatory in that church. Consequently he was deprived of government aid and he, with other members of the family, emigrated to Ireland, settling in tbe province of Ulster, in tbe north. From this small beginning the numerous branches of tbe family have sprung, having many rep resentatives in Europe, Australia and America,We now pass over the htator/ of the family coming rdown to about 1760. at which lime John Coulter, theogrand-father of tome of those v.ho were present at the last reunion held by the Coulter family, August 10, 1898, in Coulter's grove, was hot n. His wife’s name was Culbeitson. Their f family consisted of four sons, William, Thomas John and James. The former remained in Ireland, tbe others came to this country ; Thomas and James in the year 18i8. John and family later. The last, failing to keep up a correspondence with the others, was finally lost sight of, and as there are numbers lt;;f that name .in our country today, no dcubt many of them .re rr presentatives of the last tr be. Another Jamer, long since dead, Is ying in the oia grave yard,- Rossvilie, iOW First ward, Hamilton, He marrieo i Miss Brown and left one daughter vbo married a Mr. Hamilton and settled X Frankfort, Ind.Mr. Ct ulter bad been ailing for a few lays and Saturday last a physician was ,ent for and he continued to improve re m this time, walking cut on the farm, donday evening he retired, feeling ouch better. Tbe following morning at o’clock his daughter heard her father jo to the door and entered the room just n time to see him fall on his bed, after vbich he died In a short time. His wife lied September 28th, 1893.The names of the daughters and sons iving are J. C, and Thomas Coulter,Mrs. iNta. H. Stewart, Mrs, B. R, Finch ard ytrs Johnson Smith. Fifteen grand, jhiidren are now living, two having died n infancy.Mrs.Martha McClelland, aged 84 years, t resident of Hamilton, and Mrs, Samuel Douglass, aged 68, of this village, are the jnly surviving sisters. Mr C°nlter resid'd on his farm for forty-nine years,having ueen a resident of Milford township for lixty years. Rev, Cherington, of the M. B. church officiated, the funeral being largely attended.
