RECORD CLEARED A few weeks ago, we listed top scorers and, as we expected, some county basket-makers were omitted. First was A1 Kiene, who picked up 46 markers in onegame against Keystone in 1971.Now, my old buddy, Bob Eby of Seville, comes up with another omission, onewhich set an all-time record at Medina High Gymnasium. He refreshed my memory on that first (and only) County basketball tournament held in the thennew Medina gym in 1957.Seville defeated Spencer, 84-67 in that game for the county championship, afterfirst dumping Homer and then Lodi. Ed Steele, one of the county’s all-time top basketeers, had 17 points against Homer, before coming back with 25 against Lodi in the 67-58 semi-final victory.Steele, who now works in Wadsworth for another fine basket-weaver, former Wadsworth star, Service Director Bill Lyren, hit his peak in the championship game at Medina’s sparkling new gym. He tossed in 15 fielders and converted 13 of 19free throws for a record 43 points.Jerry Thompson’s 40 points is in second place at the Medina gym, unless wehear to the contrary. He was a Battling Bee.Steele, son of the head of the utilities department at Seville at the time, had a 28 point-average in the three tourney games, just behind Ken Taylor, who had a 32-point average, but only in the one game LeRoy played.Buckeye’s all-time all-county record holder, Hank Frambach (54 points), averaged 25 points per game in that tournament, /rod Tom Davenport and Mullinshad 18 each. Those Dick Brockett Sevillians who helped Ed Steele to that Medina gym mark included: Eby, Don Kreider, Stan Huffman, Gary Chidsey, John Armstrong,Warren Clapp, Don Long and Russ Longecher.Brockett’s Brigade, like John Murphy’s at Buckeye, never ceases to amaze me. This fine LeRoy graduate (and outstanding eager, too) coach used to field a team of 130-pound football players, and while I was praying that they wouldn’t get killed, the Brockett team usually was winning the game. Brockett is now at Garretsville.
