Alport of East Boa ton has received a cablegram announcing the death ofRabbi Isaac Elchonen Spector, the chief rabbi of Russia. Rabbi Speetor died in Kovno, Russia, where he has been located for 30 years.Me was OM of the most ieaVMNft men In Russia, and was one of the greatest Talmud scholars of our day, having1 written two Talmud teal works. He was the leader in all the charitable movements that were started or carried on in Russia among his coreligionists.Eight years ago the united congregations of ultra orthodox Jews of New York sent for him to act as chief rabbi for them, but the congregations In Russia prevailed upon him not to leave his home. . . .Rabbi Speetor was 80 years old, but he waa as active in his religious duties a« many men much younger. He did not tolerate violence, and his life’s work was to make his people law-abiding citlsens. His son, who has been the lecturer in one of the largest synagogues in Vilna. Russia, will fill his place m Kovno. ana will act as chief rabbi.Funeral services for the late rabbi will be held In ail the ultra orthodox Jewishsynagogues thioughout the world.
