The Journal Inquirer 2JIStafford SpeedwayStafford — A capacity crowd attended the annual Stafford Speedway banquet here Saturday night as trophies were presented to 1968 winners and all eyes were on the rapidly approaching 1969 season.A moment of silence was observed in memory of Don Mac-Tavish, killed at Daytona, Fla., two weeks ago. The young New York driver, and one time national sportsman champion, was a popular competitor at Stafford and Thompson Speedways in recent years.Before presentations were made, master of ceremonies John McCarthy, Speedway director, introduced Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Barlow, owners of the Speedway, and Bob Sail, field manager for NASCAR, the sanctioning racing authority at Stafford. Meeting the crowd for the first time was Bill Welsh of Winchester, who will be this year's track announcer.Also singled out were Carl Merrill, NASCAR track steward; Jim Moffat, who will handle track public relations and Lloyd Burnham, new track photographer who replaces “Shany” Laurent. Representatives from Thompson Speedway and Norwood, Mass. arena were introduced.Top trophy went to Carl “Bugsy” Stevens of Rehoboth, Mass., who not only led the way at Thompson and Stafford last season, but took national modified champion honors for the second year in a row.Finishing behind Stevens at Stafford was Ed Flemke of Southington; Fred Harbach of Huntington Station, L. I.; Fred DeSarro of Westerly, R. I., and Holly Wilder of Warehouse Point. Car owners for these top modified chauffers were also presented trophies.Recipients of the Tiger Division awards included track champ Mike Terrio, followed by Dick Berggren, Charlie Bom-bara, Curt Mariano, and Ken Phinney.Stafford has an ambitious program scheduled for this season, opening Sunday, Apr. 13 with a 50 lap open competition show for supermodifieds.
