He was promoted to first lieutenant, Company K, same regiment, January 1, 1862, commanding the company nearly all of thetime, until musteerd out on February 15, 1865, when he was immediately mustered into the service again as first lieutenant, Company F, First New Mexico Volunteer Infantry, Colonel Francisco Paula Abreu. He commanded Company F until promoted to adjutant of the regiment, June 1,1865, and was finally mustered out, his “services being no longer required,” September 1, 1866, havinrg served continuously for five years and fifteen days. He was- in a number of skirmishes with Apache and Navajo Indians: breveted captain U. S. Volunteers. March 13, 1865, “for distinguished gallantry in the engagement at the Adobe Walls, Texas, with the:lion and a delegate to the TwentiethNational Encampment, held at SanFrancisco in 1886. Commander ofArnold Post No. 4, Department of Rhode Island, 1897. He was the first president of the “California Volunteer Veterans Association,” elected at Detroit, Mich., August, 1891, and has I held the office of secretary and treasurer.He became a member of the Mill-I tary Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Commandery ofCalifornia, November 10, 1SS0. Insignia No. 5065.He was a mmber of the Society of California Volunteers; also of the Society of California Pioneers of New England.
