“IN DAHOMEY ” AT KENNING TON.The bright and sparkling ‘ ‘ variety ” “In Dahomey ’ ’ opened a week’s stay at the Kennington Theatre last night, and scored an immediate success. Messrs. Bert Williams and George Walker, to whose introduction England owes the cake-walk, are undoubtedly the funniest brace of negro comedians on the stage, and their ludicrous detective business made the packed house merry. The songs are of exceptional merit, and every number received several encores, while the numerous dances and the cake-walk competition were enthusiastically applauded. In a musical comedy, depending, as does “ In Dahomey,” on the excellence of the individual turns rather than on the plot, a well-balanced company is essential, and we can offer no higher praise than to say that each artist makes the most of their opportunities. The three modern financiers, Messrs. Hampton, Hill, and Lightfoot, are inimitable, and Mr. J. Shipp is a typical hustler.” Miss Lettie Williams, as the lady editor arid dressmaker, is delightfully funny, arid the negro actress, Miss Aida Walker, scored with her song, “The-Actor Lady.” The company have already had the honour of giving two command performances before the King, and as a merry, melodious, and mirthful comedy “In Dahomey” is sui generis.
