lEW, TOWANDA, PA., THURSDAY, MARCH 3,1977—SEVENSayre Elks Lodge ToHonor Prominent Valley ManThe Sayre Lodge of Elks No. 1148 will honor a past exalted ruler at its reguiar meeting Tuesday, March 15.A class of candidates will be initiated and will be known as the Jay T. Scanlin Class.A cocktail hour will be held from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m., and a roast beef dinner will be served at 7 p.m.It will also be Past Exalted Rulers Night at the lodge, and the past exalted rulers will initiate the Jay Scanlin Class.Scanlin was exalted ruler of the Sayre Lodge of Elksduring 1951 and 1952. He served on the scholarship committee and started the Elks’ golf tournament, which is now held annually. He also initiated the practice of placing books in ^e library in memory of deceased members.Scanlin has been active in the community, serving as tax collector for ^yre Borough for three ternis. He has also served as trustee of the Sayre Library since it has been at its present location. He has been a sponsor of the Sayre Little League for several years, and served as disaster chairman of the Red Cross during the Agnes Flood in 1972.He is an honorary member of the Sayre Fire Department No. 1.He is a past state com-mitteman and a past county chairman for the Democratic party; a past member of the Sayre Sportsmen’s Club and served as chairman of the Sayre Community Chest Drive.Scanlin has been self-employed in business in Sayre all his life in the General Insurance business and real estate. He also was manager of the Postal Telegraph Service in Sayre, starting in business in ^yre in 1935, untilhie rAtir^mpnf ahniit thrMiJay T. Scanlinyears ago.He is a member of the Epiphany Roman Catholic Church of Sayre. Other offices he has held are- past president of Sayre and Athens Lions Club; past president of Bradford and Sullivan County Deanery Society; past member of the Knights of Columbus of Sayre; past president of the Holy Name Society of his church; a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1490 oi Wa-verly ; a member of the Sayre American Legion Post No. 283, serving as commander at one time; a member of the Past Exalted Rulers Association of the Elks; and he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.Scanlin was born in Sayre and has lived there all his life. He is married to the former Hester Ray of Alpine, N.Y., and they are the parents of three sons and three daughters.
