The house holds significance as it was the lifelone home of two of Hammond's pioneer grade school teachers.Stillman-Mills Home Now ParsonageBy EDNA CAMPBELLStar Society EditorIf walls could speak, interesting dialogues and humorous tid bits would resound from the panels of the old Mills home located at the corner of East Merry and Orange streets where two pioneer school teachers spent many years of their long lives.The modest wooden framework structure was home for the former MissesPhoebe and Margaret Stillman whose father purchased the property around 1903 after moving here from Nortonville, Kan. It is still home for Miss Margaret, who became Mrs. Carl Eggers in later life. Miss Phoebe who was married to R. J. Mills, a photographer died several years ago.In some cases the teachers who wended their way daily to the site now the Annie Eastman school, taught threegenerations in the same lineage. They devoted their lives to instructing small children.The old house is now the parsonage of the Seventh Day Baptist Church, having been transferred to the church by family request. Mrs. Eggers retains a portion for her quarters and is cared for by the Rev. and Mrs. Earl Deland. She is nearing her 90th brithday. Rev. Deland is the current church pastor. The church isbut a stone’s throw from the parsonage.The house has remained much the same in symmetry as when built, with the exception of minor improvements, however it has been well maintained, painted and repaired. Reserved are the homsespun characteristics including the papered walls and high ceilings.The grounds are landscaped and feature many native shrubs and blossoming plants.
