Canal eraOld photos from the canal days in Delphi are hard to find. Robert Brookbank provided this photo of the north side of the courthouse square and beyond. He estimates that the photo was taken in the late 1860s or early 1870s. In the foreground is the courthouse lawn, surrounded by an iron fence. Businesses pictured on Franklin Street, 1-r, are (1) Neff Melhnger, (2) blacksmith shop, (3) Potter Bros, grocery and produce, and (4) Dimmick Allen boot/shoe store. The building behind the shoe store, on Washington Street, was a liquor store (5). The building behind the blacksmith shop was the first brick jail (6). There was a log jail before that The group of houses above and to the left of the jail are on Market Street (7). They were built for the canal workers. Near the top of the photo are two canalwarehouses (8 9). The canal ran behind the warehouses. Most of the buildings seen in this photo were destroyed in a fire The warehouse rubble was used to build the Stone Barn on North Washington Strwt in the early 1900s. Range Line Road coming out of Pittsburg can be seen in the distance (10). Leo Rider, who has painted a mural from this photo, provided identification of the buildings. The canal played an important part in the development of Delphi. The local site is the on y accessible place in the state where the historic canal is still water-filled. The Canal Days Festival and Rendezvous, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at Canal Park on North Washington Street, will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opening orthe canal in Indiana.
