Richfield school has graduationRICHFIELD SPRINGS -Richfield Springs Central School graduated 69 members in the class of '69 on Sunday afternoon in the ceremonies held in the central school auditorium.Thirty-one special awards were presented in addition to recognition of Regent Scholarship and Clark Foundation Scholarship winners, and students completing occupational courses at BOCE at Herkimer.The main address was given by Dr. Orlo M. Brees, a former New York State Legislator for 12 years and a Freedom Foundation winner, speaking on Fences and Horizons and stressing the problems to be met an the world of today.Short addresses were made by the class valedictorian andealutatorian.'The 6pecia! awards were presented by Benjamin Cizek, principal, as follows: Class of 1968 to senior boy and girl for citizenship and leadership — Mary Lou Marzeski and Michael Brophy, $5.00 each; Physical Education Awards — Susan Goldsmith and Robert Bloomfield, $5.00 each; Mathematics, Earl L. Jones prize for highest average in 3 units — Robert Wellenstein, $10.00; Industrial Arts Craftmanship Buchanan Hardware Award — David Schultz;' Industrial Arts Outstanding Ability Buchanan Hardware Award — William Pester; Farm MechanicSpringer Inc., Award — Memorial Prize for highest average for four years of high school -inT?no'Ie!t — Rmf'B T flpnoT/?* Anri.Cunningham $25.00 each; Susan Curcio. Memorial Award to a girl for excellence and appreciation of EngJish, especially in the area of literature — Lorraine Cizek, a book.Two newly established awards were among those listed, TheSusan Curcio Award was given by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Curcio in memory of their daughter, a 1968 graduate. The Vocal Music Award was given by the Vocal Music Department of the school and is the first’ recognition ever given to a senior at graduation for vocal music accomplishment or excellence.Named for the completion of courses at the Occupational Education Center in Herkimer were Donna Ainslee, Paul Domion, Susanne i)om, Peter Dibble, Carolyn Hribar, Valerie Smith, Elizabeth Van Court and Kathleen Young. Recognized as scholarship winners were: Regents scholarships — Susan Ames, Michael Brophy, Donna Cizek, John Ellsworth, Gary Fedak, Bruce Leonard, James Marzeski, and Robert Wellenstein, and Lorraine Cizek, alternate.Named for Clark Foundation Scholarship winners were: Susan Ames, Michael Brophy, Donna Cizek, Lorraine Cizek, NiloJe Deegan, John Ellsworth Carolyn Hribar, Gary Fedak, Linda Krels, Bruce Leonard,James Marzeski, Rosemary Thomas, Robert Wellenstein.Prior to presenting diplomas, Philip Patterson, president of the Board of Education, called retiring teacher, Mrs. Vera Bennett, to the stage and presented her with a special pin in recognition of her many years of service as a teacher. Mrs. Bennett -is retiring after-teaching in the upper elementary grades for 25 years.
