Whitman faced Indians as fierce as any whom Crockett fought and was killed by a group of Cayuses as treacherous as was Santa Anna at the Alamo. The early missionaries were as courageous and served the cause of progress as truly as did the man “who killed him a bar when he was only 3.” Whitman, Spalding.
