Palos ParkOne of the earliest settlers in what is now Palos Park arrived in 1834 with land grants signed by President James Monroe. In 1850, a township was organized and named Trenton until it was learned there was another Trenton Township. According to legend, the name Palos was suggested by Melan-chon A. Powell, one of the earliest settlers and the first postmaster ofPalos.Powell thought the name Palos was fitting because of a family tradition that one of his ancestors had been a crew member on a ship commanded by Christopher Columbus in 1492. The ship sailed from Palos de Frontera; Palos in Spanish means tall tree or mast of a ship. Trenton became Palos with the Park added by real estate developers.
