Garden club marks anniversaryThe Green Thumb Garden Club celebrated its 35th anniversary Monday afternoon with a tea at Trinity United Methodist Church.Approximately 60 club members and guests attended the program that included a flower arranging demonstration by Mrs. Donald Powell of Kenton, an Ohio Association of Garden Clubs judge and state chairwoman of conservation.Guests were from other garden clubs of Lima and Allen County.First meeting of the club was held in March 1948 at Delphos Public Library with 31 members and guests attending.First president elected was Esther Powell. Vice president was Hortense Fettig and secretary-treasurer was Ila Doepker. Ms. Fettig presented a talk on soil preparation and lawn care at that first meeting.Their first show was held Aug. 24, 1948, atPresbyterian Church.Proceeds from the garden club’s fundraisers, card parties and performances have been ' used for various civic projects in the area. These include landscaping of the library grounds, planting 1,000 tulip bulbs along the Miami-Erie Canal and planting redbud trees at all entrances to Delphos.The club is also active in district and state flower shows.First state flower show the club competed in was in 1951 with the theme “The Centennial Flower Show” in honor of the Delphos centennial. The club won third place in the state contest.The club placed first in district and state competition in 1956.According to the club motto, its members are “devoted toward civic and cultural projects, and promote and encourage gardening interest in the area.”Other past presidents have been Mrs. Ralph Weger in 1949, Mrs. R.K. Morgan in 1950, Mrs. Henry Fettig in 1951, Mrs. Melvin Westrich in 1952, Mrs. Paul Birkmeier in 1953, Mrs. Leslie Peltier in 1954, Mrs. E.L. Staup in 1955.Mrs. Richard Lin-demann in 1956, Mrs. Carl Foltz in 1957, Mrs. John Shenk in 1958, Mrs.Kenneth Molyneaux in 1959 and 1960, Mrs. Benno Miller in 1961, Mrs. Ralph Best in 1962.Mrs. Harold Manore in 1963, Mrs. WilliamWiesenberg in 1964 and1965, Mrs. Hubert Geise in1966, 1967 and 1968, Mrs. Donald May in 1969 and 1970, Mrs. Stan Voelkel in 1971 and 1972, Mrs. Henry Fettig in 1973, Mrs. James Wiltsie in 1974 and 1975.Mrs. Leslie Peltier in 1976, Mrs. Gilbert Miller in 1977, Mrs. Ralph Best in1978, Mrs. Henry Fettig in1979, Mrs. Ray Morton in1980, and Mrs. Donald May in 1981,1982 and 1983.
