Farming on theElnntolions was hindered ut not stopped because the slaves at that time did . most of the work in raising cotton, ribbon cane and ^other'prdducts.Ox teams pulled wagon l’loads of cotton to Mexico,A. A. Platter, who recently wrote a history of Brazoria County, stated, because the Union army ships blocked sailings out at sea.He noted tiiat Aycock's Landing, then Gulf Prairie Landing, that in about 1856 S. S. Perry I bought It and changed the name to Perry's Landing. Some of the BrazoriaCounty men who were among the Confederate army leaders he named as Frank Terry, a planter of Brazoria and Wharton Counties who organized the flth Texas Cavalry called Terry’s Texas Rangers; General John Wharton of Eagle (aland; and Albert Sidney Johnston, a Confederategeneral who died during the battle of Shiloh.John Dtmn, well informed In many historical events, said tnat besides .several forts in Galveston (then the largest city in Texas) there were a number of forts in Brazoria County, one about where is now the • Freeport Coast Guard ..-Station; another, called Mud port, near the presept. large bridge over the ui-traccastal canal; one at the bend of the Old River, just below the Phillips Petroleum Co. docks; and one near San Luis Island.BOATS SUNK .Dunn mentioned that the Cruiser Alabama, a Confederate boat built in England, sank 47 Union cargo ships/one boat, the Narragansett, a side wheel paddle steamer going down to the Gulf about 13 miles from Velasco port. The Alabama was quite a raider, and after the war [- England was blamed for thus helping the southern army to deal heavy Wows to shipping. But this was ap: ' instance where negotiations proved very k successful, one of the first, for early times.Skin divers, Dunn said, are believed to have found the hull of. the Narragansett a few yearsago,Even though the Union army had the port of GaJveeton blockaded, then was some light boat trafficbetween Velasco am Galveston by way of t shallow canal (a part 0. which was afterwards made into the intracoasta canal l leading into Wes’ Bay where the larger boak could not be manipulate effectively.Backbone c(Continued from Page 2)beautiful furniture, dee carpets and other thing she had always dreamed ( using in furnishing Peac Point. The family importi newspapers, too, wi some coming from as U away as Kentucky.
