floor of the postoffice building.Judge Nordbye ordered an investigation of Johnson^ case by Ernest J. Meili, district probation officer, and announced that his acceptance Qf the pJea would depend on the outcome of Mr, Meili's report. The plea of nolo contendere means j that Johnson will not contest the government's case against him, presented through the introduction of evidence and testimony, but at the same time the defendant is not admitting guiltNolo contendere is the plea by a defendant which, without admitting guilt, subjects him to a judgment of conviction as in the case of a plea of guilty, but does not preclude him from denying the truth of the charges in a collateral proceeding. The court indicated that if he j found he could not accept the nolo i contendere plea, Johnson would be expected to enter a pica of either Guilty or not guilty later in the week, probably by Friday.A call of the civil calendar indicated that the court term will be a short one because most of the civil cases were passed to St. Paul or Minneapolis or continued, and most of the defendants in the criminal actions so far entered pleas of guilty.Of the nine defendants who entered pleas of guilty to charges of possession of untaxed liquor, Anton Jensen, Winona dam worker, was the only one to be sentenced. Jensen was given a term of six months in the workhouse at Minneapolis.SPRING GROVESpring Grove, Minn.— (Special)—• A family gathering was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ram-stad, Sunday.
