National Park and the others would give national park status to the Arches and Capitol Reefs national monuments, giv-’ ing Utah five national parks.Chairman Roy A. Taylor, D-N.C., devoted 'Tuesday morning to hearing from representatives of conservation groups. After they finished he announced the hearing record would he kept open for 10 days to permit the filing of statements by persons who were unable to appear and also give the National Park Service time to provide additional information requested by the subcommittee.Tuesday’s principal witness was Mrs. June Viavant, Salt I.ake City, who is a member of the board of directors of the Sierra Club.Mrs, Viavant, who was walking with the assistance of a single crutch, explained her ankle sprain didn’t happen while hiking through some of Utah’s rugged park areas but in stepping fromher car in a parking lot In downtown Salt hake City.For the proposed Capitol ReeLs National Park, Mrs. Viavant- suggested “consideration, of a name change to the Waterpocket Fold National.Park.”“The area is fully deserving of national park status,she said. “Geologically the waterpocket fold is the text book example of monocline. Scientifically it is as unusual, and as spectacular as any area in. southern Utah, Reereationally, the area has much to offer.“To the car tourist; it offers magnificent vistas of Strike Valley, overlook of the waterpocket fold, roads to the Cathe-Atty.
