Rifle given for submarine bearing Kentucky’s nameFRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky long rifle that will be kept aboard the state’s namesake submarine was donated Friday at the Capitol.I hope the crew of the USS Kentucky will be proud of this line rifle, Michael Spenlau. president of the Kentucky Corps of Longrif-lemen, said in a precommissioning ceremony.The USS Kentucky, which will carry Trident missiles and a crew of 175, was christened Aug. 11. It is to be commissioned in New London, Conn.. on July 13. when the rifle will be put aboard.“It is, in a very real sense, our ship. said former University of Kentucky president Otis Singletary, chairman of the commissioning committee.The submarine’s logo features a long rifle and powderTiom above the slogan ‘Thoroughbred of theFleet. ,Spenlau\ who wore buckskins for the eveht, said the rifle was made three or four years ago by corps member Charles Wallingford of Union in Boone County.The submarine was on the drawing board at the Ume, and the rifle was made with it in mind. lt;Spenlau said.The rifle’s stock, made from a single piece of curly maple, has a dark, antique look. It has been fired only for purposes of sighting, Spenlau said.The corps also donated a long rifle that is kept aboard the submarine USS Daniel Boone, Spenlau said.David McAnelly, chief of staff for Gov. Wallace Wilkinson, also presented to Singletary a silver tray that was put aboard the original USS Kentucky, a battleship, at its commissioning in 1900.
