OLDEST HOUSEMTHE COUNTYMarion Township Has The Remains Of A Log Cabin Eighty Years Old.THAT BUILDING IS AN INFANTShelby Mills Is One Hundred Years Old And There fs One Probably Older. The question is ashed where is the oldest house in Shelby county? It It was not tor the Interest being taken in the Centennial celebration this question probably would never have been asked. The gentleman who asked the question stated that in Marion township Is a portion of a log house, now a part of a stable, that is known to be eighty years old. The Republican thinks it knows where the oldest house in Shelby county la but as a matter of fact there may be a number of still older houses. The house in mind is still used as a residence with additions that have been made through a number of years.Over the county are a number ot very old houses, that is in comparison to tlie age of the county. It must be kept in mind that the state of Indiana fs still in swaddling clothes. A building in the first states one hundred years old would tot be considered a curiosity. Over by Brookvilte is a church still being used that was constructed in 180S. At Waldron, this county, is a fine lady who is more than 100 years old and she baa a slater who will soon round out a century of years. Ages of people have been well kept but unfortunately no attention has been given to the preservation or even the history of the first house built in this county. Indianapolis Is about to place a marker on the-eite of the first cabin built in Marion county. Marfon, Shelby, Decatur and Rush counties are practically all of the same age, the variance being only in the date of organization. Franklin and Dearborn counties are much older. Franklin conftty contained 7,000 population when Shelby county was organized. There is no question but what the James Wilson cabin built in the Blue river settlement, now Marion, was the first white habitation in what is now Shelby county. The site of that cabin is still pretty well preserved and the exact spot could undoubtedly be pointed out by some citizen of Marion township. Not a marker, but a monument should be placed there-The citizens of Marion township should never stop until the public square of that village in taken over by the board of county commissioners and properly marked. Probably the Whetzel trace crossed that bit of ground, If it did not it was not far a way. To park the public square in Marion, set a monument to the Whet-;zel trrtce and erect rt monument to the Wilsdri edbiii dild tiiBil properly maintain them, would not cost very much and at that it should not be done cheaply but It should he done and this year is the time to startIn Shelbyvilie are a number of buildings that arc more than Seventy years old. ThCfW* are Scattered over the city In various places. A number of these ktil 1 largely retain their original form and are in excellent state of preservation. If one would get down to brass tacks and stick to the proposition it probably could be shown that a large portion of the original part Shelby Mills, on North Harrison street, is still doing business at the old stand. If this is true then that portion of the original building would stand 'close for first honors tor the oldest building iti Shel by county. One hundred years ago John Walker built the Shelby Mills. In connection with it he had the first saw mill in the county. The dams that furnished the water for the mill race were constructed at the confluence of Big anti Little Blue rivers. It has not been so very many vears that the use of these dams were discontinued. The old cannon that 19 out in the city park could tell at least one story concerning the old mill race at Harrison street. That cannon was brought here about 18G8 by-Alonzo Blair and David Louden and pther whoopers tip for the Democrat-* icVartj 4n order to make more noise than Republicans could make with anvils. A^that time the Republican party was very aggressive. The “fean-ncm was placed in the custody of James Capp who hart served in the cfvil war. The old piece was known as Jim Capp's cannon/’ At every Democratic rally, and they were rather numerous, Jim would pull thfs cannon out and fire it repeatedly. This got on the nerves of a lot of young Republicans so one night afttr Jim hart fired the cannon numeroustimes In honor of Democracy a gang or Republicans went to the shed where It was housed* pulled it out and dragged it to the bridge over the mill race on North Harrison street and dumped it In. Next morning when Jim discovered his cannon was absent he hot footed to Blafr and to Louden. As a matter of fact be was breathing maledictions against the perpetrators of the ghastly act of even touchfng his cannon let alone stealing it. Louden and Blair were a wise pair and were not so easily flnstrated. They knew that the old cannon had not walked away and they understood it would be found In time. They went to work but the water in the mill race well covered the artillery. Finally the water was let out of the race to repair the mill and Jim Capp’s cannon was found. It had sunk in the mud considerably but it was finally dragged out and did service for a number of years. Perhaps the last time it was fired was by Warren Hachl when he lost his arm. This is digressing somewhat from lt;1 the subject of the oldest house in • Shelby county but as the Shelby Mills J* will run a close race' for that dls-11 tinction the old mill race Is entitled j1 to tell Its story concerning the piece 11 of artillery now in the city park. Probably there la ope other house in the county older than tlu* ShelbyMills but evetMhu! is 3 question that will never he settled now. If the owners of the Shelby Mills would place a t' marker on the side of that building “This is the oldest building in Shei-H by county*’ they would not be far ! from the facts but this is not the i 1 building in the mind of The Repub- jslican.GEORGE SNYDERDIED YESTERDAYFARMER OF NOBLE TOWNSHIP itPASSED AWAY AFTER ILLNESS OF SEYERAL MONTHS.FUNERAL SERVICE MONDAYGeorge H.
