These log cab-j ins were not very desirable homes and were not equipped with screen doors as are our modern homes of today. There was no way of keeping the mosquitoes awav only by building smoke fires. Mosquitoes were very plentiful at this time and were j breeders of disease. The people I soon found that the swamps werebreeding places for mosquitoes and as a source of protection they began to dig small open ditches through these swamps. The manufacture of tile was very essential and important at this time. This was also a better and cheaper means of transportation.After the pioneers had started the settlement of Jackson township and had improved the roads, farming and drainage system, people began to settle more extensively until at the present Jackson township is rather thickly populated.Jackson, one of the townships of White County, was first settled by farmers from Pennsylvania. Ohio. New York. Virginia. Kentucky and Tennessee. These people obtained large farms from the government and soon a busy community was established. Tn 1834 the first presidential election was recorded.
