FRIDAY, JUNE 12, 1936uTh% night Is long; that never finds the day.”—Shakespeare,TENDENCY AGAIN TOW ABB PROHIBITIONWe are beginning to wonder if repeal of prohibition was the right thing,, to do after ulh Seems though there is more drinkings more drunkenness, more reckless driving than there used to he, and while there was plenty of such stuff going on in thv good, old prohibition days, it is apparent now to almost any* man or woman that the problem of drinking is fi'ot solved yet—not by a long shotUnder prohibition it was common practice fo? our boys and girls to get their liquor of some bootlegger , . , now they get it at our liquor stores, Tho liquor in either ease was bad, no matter how good it was supposed to be. All liquor is bad, even if it i? legal* has all the ear- marks of honest manufacture and-is sold with taxes paid to the state. Liquor nevei did anybody any good, Its abuse has caused endlesF sorrow, misery, distress and thousands of untimely deaths^ * * *In4'the good4 old days we used to see boya antf girls- get their* booze1 of some bootlegger in. some alley, or behind some dance hall, or in some base ment* barn or kitchen. Now, they go in booths in roadside cafes and drink It openly and with perfect abandon. In- the larger cities? you see them sitting at- tables on red cushioned easy chairs in cool, de* lightful air-conditioned “saloons” that are more In-vitingthan any Y« M. C. A, or Y, W. C. A.No, we don't know what to do about it, but we still think there is a lot to what kind of training a boy* or girl gets at home, Maybe the solution lies in education. Maybe there isn't any solution. Maybe we will have to take another whirl at prohibition. Maybe, now that we have our G-men on the job, there wouldn't be so much gangster stuff, liquor rackets or what have you, if we did try prohibition ; again, * * *Law enforcing officers tell us that there is more drinking, more drunkenness and more reckless driving* today than ever before in our history, Maybe we need:.better law enforcement . , . a pretty stiff contract if ~we as a people are not going to support our law enforcing officers, which we didn’t do in the good*: old? prohibition days; Before prohibition, away back when we were young* it used to be considered a disgrace for any boy-or girl to go to a dance with the smell of liquor on his or her breath. We would no more have thought' of going into a saloon than of shooting Niagara Falls in a barrel. At home, in school, everywhere ■lt; we were,.taught that liquor was an evil and had evil consequences . * . that to succeed in business we sob^r,, an cp. stay that way, *Fhe * pchemo wiSfrked'pretty well with us/but it seems thattimes have changed.Prohibition, when it was tried, didn't work, but here is considerable sentiment abroad in the land :o want to try it again. Maybe it can be made to vorlc next time, but we still think our best bet is in tducion „ , , and a real genuine desire on the part►f our citizens to help our officers enforce the laws.►*- .rtitatever those laws mav be.
