One of Oelphos’ First ar4 Best Known Settlers Passesjrway.The many friends of Bernard Esch | will learn with sorrow of hie death, which occurred at his home near Dexter, Cowley county, Kansas, on Tuesday evening, June 3, 1884, aged sixtj-four years. The deceased was for a long series of years an active business man in Delphos, and no individual in this locality was better or more favorably known. His great generosity and kindness of heart will not be forgotton by those who knew him. The announcement of his death created profound sorrow here at his old home. Mr. Esch left Delphos in November 1880, and embarked in farming and stock raising in Kansas. At one time he possessed ample wealth, but reverses came on and left him comparatively poor.Bernard Esch was boru January 1st, 1821, on a farm owned by bis parents in the neighborhood of Osna-bruck, Germany, lie coutinued to live with his parents until August, 1842, when he came to America with Mr. Theodore Wrocklage, who in that year brought over a colony of forty-two persons. Arriving at Toledo, they came as far as Providence, a village opposite' Grand Rapids, Ohio, bv canal, but here their further progress by this means was impeded by the close of navagation, November 17th, so that the remainder of the way had to be made afoot, stopping at the cabins along the river until their arrival at Fort Jennings. At that early date Delpho.s had no existence, but the locality where since has sprung Into life a large and flourishing town, was then known as “the ten-mile woods.” In 1844 Esch Wrocklage formed a partnership and erected an ashery, and in the following year opened a general
