Pilarczyk presided at the June 4 ordination rite, which was attended by more than 60 priests, as well as family and friends who filled the cathedral to capacity. As the rite began, the three ordinandi — Seger, a 37-year-old former Christian Brother; Windholtz, 34, who left behind a career as an internal auditor; and Men-trup, 29, a former teacher at St. Xavier High School and bartender — came forward to express their readiness and willingness to be ordained.Father James Walsh, rector of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, vouched for their readiness, stating “After inquiry among the people of Christ and upon recommendation of those concerned with their training, I testify that they have been found worthy.”As the archbishop consented to the ordination, the congregation applauded in agreement, and the priests-to-be responded with smiles.During the rest of the rite, which is brimming with tradition and symbolism, the candidates knelt before the arch-bishoD. promising obedience to him andhis successors; lay face down on the sanctuary floor while the congregation prayed and sang the Litany of the Saints; stood as fellow-clergy dressed them in the garments of their new ministryythe stole and chasuble; and rubbed tneirhands with the consecrated oil wsth which they were anointed by the archbishop. In a solemn procession, all priests in attendance laid hands on the foreheads and prayed over each new priest. In his homily welcoming the new clergy, Archbishop Pilarczyk said that even though priestly ministry is hard work, it is “a great thing to be priest.“It’s a ministry that comes to us not because of our human talents and capabilities, but just because God loves his people so much.”The prelate called the priests “messengers of God’s good news — good news that every human creature needsto hear and experience over and overagain, not because it is so easily forgettable, but because it seems too good to betrue.”The celebration did not end with the closing procession. It continued at a joint reception in the cathedral undercroft and at private parties June 4 and 5, planned by the families and friends of each new priest.MtKE WILLIAMSThe ordinandi prostrate themselves.
