FROM MAY TO OCTOBERGirl Scout Cabin GetsBY MARCIA MORRISONThe house that cookies and Lions built really gets quite a workout from Austin Girl Scouts.Situated 2V4 miles west of Austin, the Girl Scout Cabin was built from the proceeds of cookie sales. The Austin Lions provided the labor to build a sleeping- porch and basement, improved the road leading to the cabin and periodically make needed repairs on the building and grounds.And Thursday evening, the Lions will go out again to make repairs and work on the grounds. The Girl Scout Council as well as the scouts themselves will serve a picnic dinner.Surrounded by NatureAccommodating a troop, of from 20 to 25, the cabin is surrounded by all kinds of flowers, from violets to trillium; trees, from aspen to pine: birds, from red wingsto robins. Here is where the girls have the opportunity to learn by doing, according to Miss Dorothy Arneson, executive director. They learn to enjoy the outdoors, learn additional campcraft skills and practice the art of living and sharing together.Plan Weeks in Advance The cabin has been used every week-end since May for overnights by intermediate scouts while Brownies often go out for picnics. Used from April to October, the most popular week-ends are in May and September. Usually the troops go out Friday nights, cook their suppers, participate in troop-planned activities, sleep on the sleeping porch and spend the next day outdoors — then sometimes spend another night. The troop leader and two other adults are required by regulations to accompanythe girls.WorkoutWeeks in advance, the troop begins to plan for the cabin overnight and duties are delegated to the various patrols. One patrol isresponsible for the cooking, another for purchasing, one for dishes and one for clean-up. Most troops use a “kaper” (Girl Scout lingo for K. P.) chart to show which jobs will be done by whom. From the time the first camping discussion begins to the time when the last duffel bag is unpacked and shelved away until the next trip, the camping program via the Girl Scout cabin is in full force.The cabin is especially equipped for modern and safe camping, with the sleeping porch and cots, a wood range, fireplace, cooking and eating utensils, electric refrigeration, electric lights — and an outdoor pump provides the “Caddie Wood* lawn” touch.
