HOOSIER ATHLETESHope To Make Showing in Conference Meet.Lafayette Ind., Juno 5.—The first delegation to the all-western conference track and field meet at Madison, Wis., Saturday, left here today. The Boiler Makers are expecting this year to make their best record in years at the conference meet. Eight men were selected for the team, and the selection has been approved by athletic director Hugh Nicol and the faculty. East, the fast quartcr-milcr, was first to leave. He will take part in preliminary heats of the quarter mile tomorrow. Coach Mahan .accompanied him.Applegate and Garoutte, Purdue’s dash men will leave early tomorrow morning, accompanied by Phelps, the polo vaulter and broad jumper; Ruffner, shot putter and discus man; Cleve and, mile runner; Busby, hurdler; Spray and Laportc, two-milers. Athletic director Nicol will leave tomorrow night for Madison to attend the meeting of the athletic directors of the conference, at which time foot Ml I officials will Ix; selected for next season.Notre Dame in MeetFive men will comprise the Notre Dame track representation in the conference meet to be held at Madison next Saturday. Captain Plant, Hanahan, Birder, Rockne and Eichenlaub will compose the party. Eichenlaub is the favorite of the coaches for places in the shotput and discus in competition with Saturday's entrants. The big football star has been showing splendid form since the opening of the outdoor season, and with a record of 42 feet 4 inches in the shotput should land a place. Eichenlaub has been heaving the discus around 125 feet in practice.In the half mile Notre Dame will be represented by Plant, who is expected to give Osborne, of Northwestern, a stiff fight for the honors. Hanahan and Birder in the quarter mile, and Rockne, in the pole vault and broad jump, will round out the list. Plant, Hanahan, Birder and Rockne will form the relay team if it is decided to enter the mile grind.title gamtttoday'I
