The special flag currently flying under the American flag outside the post office designates that the Delphi Post Office is part of a district achieving this honor.VanSickle said the post office also flies another special flag at designated times of the year. Flag Day, June 14, is one of six times a year that post offices fly the POW-MIA flags.‘Heroes stamp’VanSickle said a special heroes stamp will be available on June 7. It shows the now famous picture of three firemen raising an American flag amidst the debris left from Sept. 11. It will be sold for 45 cents, with the proceeds above the cost of a regular stamp going to FEMA for distribution to families of emergency personnel killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. The stamp will be availableFrom page 1through the end of 2004.Another ongoing nationwide project is the National Association of Letter Carriers food drive, which the Delphi Post Office always takes part in.VanSickle recently wrote a brief history of the Delphi Post Office for the Delphi Rotary Club. Thepost office was established in 1828 and the first postmaster was Abnei Robinson, whose family was the first to settle in Carroll County.The post office was located in many different buildings before remaining in the rear of the Murph) and Watts Drug Store (known as Orr’s Drug Store in more recent times). Then it was moved to the northwest comer of the courthouse square (destroyed by the fire of 1935), and from 1936-37 has been in its present location, corner ol Franklin and Market streets VanSickle is the 30th postmaster in the history of the post office.Other career employees at the Delphi Post Office are rural carriers John Mears, Ken Brown, Shirley Sterrett, Terry Duff, and Cathy Crane; city carriers Rich Marchand and Kevin Hathaway; and clerks Wendy Kuns, Charlotte Wallace, Jerry Merkel, and Pete Kennan; and substitute rural carriers Marion Rossetter, John Calloway, Sandi James, and Jennifer Sales.
