The homecoming, if the original 12 families coming to Illinois from Airy, Tenn., to settle there are represented, will be like the homecoming of the 12 tribes of Israel, for the members are scattered far and wide.A goodly number, however, do still reside in and near Saline county. They are the Hortons, the Barnes. Jordans, Ewells, Wrights, Kilgores, Moores, Cannons. Kudos. Estes. Biglers, Chisems, and Storys. Chisem Estes was the first of the members of the 12 families to die in Illinois, and his bur-GOP Seeks NewLaw to ControlFederal JobsWASHINGTON lt;U.E _ Republicans hunted for a new approach today to give them control over an assortment of federal jobs filled by Democratic appointees who have been given civil service status.Opposition from veterans' groups and Democrats have frustrated GOP efforts in both House and Senate to take over these jobs through | riders to appropriations bills.Chairman Frank Carlson (R-Kans.) of the Senate Civil Service Committee told a reporter he is consulting the Civil Service Commission on ways of achieving the goal through separate legislation.A separate bill permitting dismissal of the Democratic holdovers would be easier to pass than the appropriations riders because it would require only a simple majori-!ty vote.Carlson failed in an effort to attach such riders to the State-Jus-tice-Commerce Departments appropriations bill this week because a two thirds vote was required.His riders would give the secretaries of those departments a free hand to fire employes who did not obtain their jobs through the competitive civil service system but were ‘ blanketc'd in” to civil service jobs.As written, his proposals would have made about 300.000 of the 2.500.000 federal employes subject to dismissal, if applied to all gov-I eminent departments and agencies. He told the Senate, however, that he would be willing to amend the proposals to protect the special status of veterans.Picked Up by Military AuthoritiesMilitary authorities last night came to Harrisburg and picked up George Edwin Stiles of Eldorado, held in the county jail as AWOL from Fort Sill. It will be noticed that Wren’s name was not among the first 12 families, so he was likely a Johnny Come Lately”I then.i None of them intended to settle there, but an outbreak of smallpox .among the caravan, headed for Galena, caused them to camp and there they stayed.Indians were still about as late as 1834, when 12 or 15 marauding Shawnees attacked the blockhouse that had been set up in 1814. by Hankersen Rude, who was the first postmaster there and probably the only one.Somerset was one of the first five voting precincts organized when county government was established in Saline, and there was a post office there from 1834 to 1838. with mail being delivered by stage coaches, drawD by four horses. Zodak Aydelotte. a Frenchman. operated a grist mill and the first mercantile store, dealing in general merchandise in the county, was at Somerset. The two story building which housed it is still standing, and the upper floor is the lodge room for the IOOF lodge Takes on New LifeThe old church still has lettered over the entrance “Big Saline United Baptist,” although this church has been in the Big Saline Missionary Baptist association for , many years.The church which reached its lowest ebb in attendance and membership about a year ago, is taking on new life, as is also the community Instead of a silver mine, there is a coal mine, a stripping operation by Beecher Williams, only a short way from the church. Traffic to the Old Stone Face goes right by the church and the return of boys and girls from Southern Illinois university, where they came under the influence of the Baptist Foundation, has boded well for the community.Tne board of deacons which had shrunk to one man. Gwin Davis, will be increased as church members demonstrate their worthiness, the Rev. W. P. Webb, pastor, said Rev. Webb accepted the call to this church last December, and ! many who had ceased going to church, or started attending some other church are again finding his religion of kindness and the Golden Rule an inspiration.Program Begins Saturday Evening | Meetings are held on the first and third Sundays.Attendance has increased from nine to 36 in Sunday school and a junior choir is scouting the area ifor good voices and willing uork-lers. The church school at St Mary's Catholic church is being held at the Horace Mann school and has been in session for a week with another week to go. Women of the parish are assisting Sisters Melissa and John Viarine. who came from St Louis to conduct the school, in which 76 children arc enrolled.In the Protestant churches of Harrisburg the Vacation Bible schools start Monday and continue for two weeks, sessions being from 8:45 a. m. to 12 noon. The Presbyterian church school will be held at the Junior high school All of the others will be held at the churches.The Presbyterian church school has as superintendent Mrs. Louis Gall, and Mrs. Dale Sullivan is in charge of the music. Catherine Anderson and Susan Sefried will have charge of handiwork. The teachers are Mrs Rob Roy Brown, Mrs. Gordon McGehee, Mrs. Jane Leo Rice, Mrs. C. R VanTrea.se, and Mrs. J.
