MEMORIAL DAYPerfect Weather and the Day Beauti fully Ob»erved in Wilmington.Last Friday was an ideal May .'JO and the people of Wilmington, and especially ttie veterans of ttie Civil War, j gave sincere devotions to the memory of those who sacrificed their lives on the field of battle that the f’nion might survive, and those who. after returning at the close of hostilities and resuming civil pursuits, have since joined their comrades who fell on Southern battle fields.The Memorial day exercises were commenced early on Friday morning by the Boy Soout activities under command of Chief Scout Denver Williams.All business was suspended during the afternoon and the day sacredly observed a-* befitted the memorial occasion. Although a very busy season with farmers many country people laid aside their work to Oin in ttie sacred exercises, and the lt;ipera House was inadequate to accommodate allwho desired to attend.The ritualistic service of the Grand , Army of the Republic was observed with impressive effect in accordance wuth tile G. A. It. program published last week. The address by Itev. C. L , Wingett. of West boro, superannuated . ministerof the Methodist church, and , a G. A. Ft. comrade, was much appreciated by the veterans and contained , a lesson to the younger generation. .The vocal music was by the audi- , ence. and the Wilmington MilitaryBand, assembled for the occasion, discoursed very acceptable music, both , in the Opera House, in the parade and , at the cemetery, where the arrange- jmerits were carried out as arranged. c There was a good representation of . the G. ( veterans making the best of the fine weather and many appearing in tlie ranks whom inclement weather would ■• ihave excluded. jThe f'informed Division Knights of1’ythiai turned out in the parade quite strong and made a very handsome appearance. and were under command of Captain M B Denver.
