Gay Pride festival to draw 500By SONIA BOIN Montgomery Bureau ChiefROCKVILLE - More than 500 people are expected to attend a festival Sunday celebrating the first Lesbian - Bisexual Gay Prkle Month inMontgomery County.Now that it has advanced from having one day a year designated to a full month, the Gay A Lesbian Interests Consortium of Montgomery County is kicking off a number of activities under the theme “FromSilence to'Celebration.”Bonnie J. Berger, a board member of the consortium said the fact that both County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and the County Council are presenting the group with proclamations signals that “we are full partners in the county with all the other diverse groups.”“We are proud to be a part of Montgomery County and to have such tremendous support from the county’s leadership. It is an ideal place to live, to work, to relax and to raise our families,” Ms. Berger said.Noting that no one in her organization has heard of any opposition to the declarations, Ms. Berger said Mr. Duncan will present his proclamation Tuesday under the heading of Lesbian and Gay Month. The council's proclamation to be presented June 13 will be headed Lesbian, Bisexual and Gay Month. She said “we're calling it Montgomery Pride '95.”Ms. Berger said 45 vendors from non-profit organizations, businesses and county government agencies will have booths at Sunday’s festival at Valley Mill Park on East Randolph Road near New Hampshire Avenue. Scheduled from noon until 6 p.m., the festival will also feature “some of the finest local gay and lesbian musicians in the area performing from 1 to 6 p.m.” Ms. Berger said.The county’s Office of Human Resources has scheduled a discussion on Gay and Lesbian Issues in the Workplace for June 26, when U.S. Rep. Constance Morelia (R-8) will discuss a proposed Employment Non-Discrimination Act she is cosponsoring.Carlos Manduley, coordinator of the “Workforce Diversity Management Initiative” that’s been holding a series of discussions, said Mrs. Morelia is “a lead sponsor” of the bill that would prohibit employment discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation.The discussion is scheduled from 12 to 1:30 p.m. June 26, in the Lobby Auditorium of the Executive Office Building in Rockville.County libraries will be distributing a book list of of their lesbian -bisexual - gay collection.
