Pag* 18—Wadnasday, July 31, 1963—Tha LHouserville Marks. .« 1175th AnniversaryHOUSERVILLE - After nearly two years of preparation for the event, this Centre County community will celebrate August X X and 4 the 175th anniversary of its founding.Houserville is today a suburban residential area just east of the borough of State College and the Pennsylvania State University. Little remains but portions of the woolen factory, grist mill, forage shop, blacksmith shop, post office, store, or one room school which made up the village established in 1788 by Jacob Houser, a Revolutionary War soldier.One feature of the celebration will be visits to eight of the older homes, most of which were built by Houser or his descendants.Other features include an antique show, sale of handicraft such as aprons, woodcraft, quilts, rugs and antiques, a reunion banquet for alumni and friends of the old one-room school, a Pennsylvania Dutch Supper, auction of hand-made quilts and braided rugs made especially for the celebration, crowning of a Princess Nit-a-Nee honoring a legendary Indian regent of the area, a muzzle loader shoot, an evening of old time folk games, selecting winners of bedhi growing contest and ladies' fancy dress competition, a special worship service, and a reunion of the Houser family. A pageant entitled, “In the Shadow of Mt. Nittany which depicts the early settlement of the area by Houser and his friendly relations with the Indians, will be given at 6 p.m. Sunday evening.Descendants of Houser have been widely scattered. Letters indicating intention to attend the celebration have been received from New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Georgia, Florida, Michigan and many sections of Pennsylvania.. VA significant outgrowth of the celebration has been the current publication of a history of Houser-villt by J. Marvin Lee. Tbe same author has also compiled a genealogy of Jacob Houser descendants and assisted the authors of the historical pageant, Miss Edith Guether and Mrs. Marvin Runner.Mr. Lee, beside serving at general chairman for the celebration and director of the pageant has constructed a model topographic map of Houserville which will be on display.Ia commemoration of the event, the College Township Lions Club historical calendar this year features a picture of the original Ja*cob Houser cabin along Spring Creek ,a few hundred yards down stream from Houserville.The reunion banquet for those who had been pupils at the old one-room school is set for Friday evening at 6:30. Saturday's events will begin at 10 a.m., when the historic homes will be opened, and the antique show, flintlock shoot, and selection of the princess, will begin.The beards and fancy dresses will be judged in the early afternoon. Activities will be suspended after ft p.m. for the Dutch supper, which will be served until 7. The auction at 7:30 p.m. will be followed by folk games and square dancing.Sunday's events will begin with the worship service at 10:15, with the Rev. Max M. Houser, executive secretary, Division of Evangelism, Pennsylvania Council of Churches, in the pulpit. He is a great, great grandson of the founder of Houserville.The historic homes and the antique show will be open Sunday afternoon. The Houser reunion is set for 2 p.m.Mrs. John Nordberg, Houserville, is in charge of helping visitors make housing arrangements. Mrs. Millie Brown, Pleasant Gap, has tickets for the school reunion. Mrs. William Schreck, Lemont, has tickets for the homes tour and the Dutch supper.G.B. Winters Gets New JobG. Britten Winters, Jr., a graduate of the Lock Haven State College in 1955, and former editorof the college annual, The Praeco, has accepted a position as administrative assistant to the superintendent of schools in Glassboro, N. J.Mr. * Winters, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Winters of Williamsport, has been teaching at the Wayne School in Radnor Tup., Philadelphia..Hie Winters family lives in Glassboro. Mr. Winters is working toward his doctorate at Rutgers University.Sunken Ferry Owner Jailed in EgyptCAIRO CAP)—The owner of the Nile ferry boat which sank and drowned 214 people last May 4 was convicted of negligence Monday and sentenced to seven years in prison. Three crew members were sentenced to four years.
