An Editorial With the opening of the York town Sesquicentennial celebration In October, the town of Smith and the county of Isle of Wight have a wonderful opportunity of advertising its advantages to thou sands of tourists who will visit the Peninsula on that occasion. An attendance estimated at 5000,000 is expected to be present during the celebration, and if an attractive booklet, giving brief, yet interesting and effective historical sketches of the town of Smithfield and the county, were issued and distributed among as many tour ists as it would be possible to reach (gay, 10,000 booklets), consider what this advertising would mean to this community. This is an op ortunity that can be grasped only once in a half century, at the low est—possibly this will be the last celebration of the surrender of Cornwallis that will ever be held at Yorktown. A booklet of this nature, would unquestionably be the means of directing thousands of people here who otherwise would leave the Peninsula without considering this locality in their itinerary. The cost for producing such a booklet would, Indeed, be small In com parison with the results that could be expected from this unique ad vertising. That the town is the home of the famous Smithfield dams would, in itself, appeal to thousands; in ad dition, there are Interesting his torical points in the county that would well be worth, the tourists’ time in visiting. There are few towns and counties that could cap italize from this large gathering to a greater extent than can Smith field, and this county. To lui trate, suppose out of 500,000 peo ple, only 10,000 visited Smithfield and the county of Isle of Wight during their attendance upon the celebration, is not safe to say that they would spend in the town and county at least one dollar each, a total of $10,000. Where could you expend a small amount of men you expend a small amount kf ey ey and get back so large a divi dend. In addition to this, the town and county will have been advertis ed in a manner that should be pro ductive of good in the future. The plan is feasible: the results are almost certain. This is an opportunitty that should be taken advantage of.
