THE OLDEST BUILDING THISCITY NOW BEING TAKEN DOWNStructure On North Harrison Street More Than Ninety Years Old.WAS A MODERN HOUSE THENBrick Was Hauled By Ox Team With Nathan GoodrichThe Driver.The two-story brick building on Harrison street, immediately north ofFranklin stret. that is now being takendown, is undoubtedly the oldest brick building in Shelbyville and is probably the oldest structure of any kind within the city limits There is scarcely a question but that the old frame-covered log house at the end of East Broadway is Hie oldest building of any kind In this county The log part of the structure was erected by John Hendricks, father of Thomas A. Hendricks. This was during the later part of 1820.The building on North Harrison street is about ninety years old. The exact date of its construction, the name of the man who owned it and the builder, have all been lost to history. Its approximate age Is fixed by the fact that the brick in the original building waa hauled from the kiln to the building by Nathan Good-rich, who waa not then married. For conveying the brick he uaed a yoke of young oxen, which he had juat finished breaking, that being one of hia duties on the farm. His home waa immediately east and a bit south of the east end of the present Tine street bridge. This story was told the writer by Mr Goodrich (but no dates were taken at the time) who I might have asked for a hill of particulars. the exact year, what be wasi' paid for hauling the bricks, and a dozen other questions that would be of some interest to a few people now but were then passed by as of no value If Mr Goodrich was no} married until two years after he hauled the bricks, then the building isninety years oldMore than forty years ago, thebuilding was remodeled by Newton{Robins, father of Mrs. Fannie Powell, his home being on the ground where Mrs Powell now lives. For a num her of years, the south room of the first floor was occupied by the post-office Since then it has been occupied by various persons with different kinds of stores. The original building that stood on the south side of the brick building was a two-story frame structure and was said to be the first two-story frame building erected in Shelbyville. It was occupied for a number of years by James Thomas, who conducted a fashionable dry goods and grocery store. As Janies M. Goodrich was one of the clerks in that store when he was a mere lad, he could tell many stories concerning what was going on In Shelbyville at that date. Mr. Robins tore down the old frame building and erected in Its place the two-story brick building that has been occupied by the Floyd drug store for tarty years. Dr, R. M.
