YWENTY-Six JULY 20, 1977Library’s paBy RUTH RANK bA brisk “exchange” in paper- pback books is one of the most cipopular of the newer-services at nMassillon Public Library. PThe paperback exchange is made on a “bring-onc-in and mtake one-out” basis. No library trcard or registration is required, only a signature.The exchange has been in operation at the main library since January and even earlier at the West Side branch. Librarians say it is attracting readers who did not previously use library facilities, and many secure regular borrowing cards.Despite the present furor over functional illiteracy in the younger generation, Massillon Public Library records show that book borrowing is increasing in the children’s department. Another healthy sign in the 1976 report is an increased use of the West Side branch and of the Navarre and Brewster branches.Irene Gankoski, assistant librarian, says the number of young people using the facilities is “encouraging.” There also seer;.-. io be a trend toward red’ vering” reading as a pasti.. ., she notes.The library, in one form or another, is one of Massillon’s oidcst institutions.▲ ii • • •
