SPEEBERG fiOTH WEDDING MISANNIVERSARY OFThe home of Mr. and Mra. William ^ Sperberg in Red River, Shawano, Rt; ^ 2, was the scene of a delightful ceie-b ration on Sunday, July 16, the occa- ~ 6 aion being the 60th wedding anniver- , ^sary of the couple. j £clcLuncheon and dinner were served - ( to 82 guests. The tables were set, maj outside the house, under the trees, in j oj, ( a natural setting of flowers and T shrubg. A beautiful two-tier wedding cake formed the center decoration of the bridal feast. Other decorations included a fancy cake for each child of the couple. These cakes were in various sizes, the oldest child having the largest cake and the youngest child having the smallest one. Each, of these cakes was topped by a small doll dressed to represent the .owner and each carried the owner's initial.A program was given in the afternoon in honor of the couple. Lawrence Sper-berg, a grandson of the Sperbergs, from Havana, Cuba, where he is engaged in the rubber industry, gave an interesting lecture on Cuba. Another grandson, Leonard Christen, of Bellingham, Washington, sang a solo,“In the Land Where We’ll Never Grow Old. This hymn also was sung on the occasion of the Sperbergs’ golden wedding anniversary by Mr. Christen’s father, who is now deceased. The program was concluded with a duet by Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Christen, “Take Time to Be Holy.During the afternoon and evening various candid camera studies were made of various family groups, guests and so on. The most interesting of these, perhaps, was taken of the four great-grandchildren present. In this group, Shirley Jean Habeck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Habeck, Shawano, Rt. 2, held little four-weeks-old Jerry Bartlein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Bartlein, of Shawano. James and Nancy, children of Mr. and Mrs. Erve Habeck, of Ewen, Michigan, completed the group. These camera shots will be used to illustrate a bound book of the history, anecdotes and comments on the celebration, This book will be presented to the honored couple as a wedding gift from, the grandchildren.Mrs. William Sperberg, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Barf-knecht, was bom in Wangeritz, Pom-erin, Germany, in 1866. A.t the age of 13, she came to Wisconsin with her family, who settled on a farmnear Shawano.Mr. Sperberg was bom in Ahlbeck, Pomerin, Germany, in 1857, although he was of French descent. At the age of six he journeyed with his family across the Atlantic to Canada, ^ where his parents purchased a farm di near a French settlement in Lenfrew, County Ontario, Canada. When Mr. Sperberg was :21 years of age he came to Shawano county and purchased a farm in the town of Richmond. In 1879, Mr. and Mrs, Sperberg were married by Rev. Dickie of the Lutheran church.Mr. and Mrs. Sperberg retired from active farm life and moved to the little village of Red River in 1916. They are still active in community life and church work. -Both are great readers and have many interests. Mrs. Sperberg enjoys gardening and Mr. Sperberg*s hobby is music, he plays the violin.Mrs. Sperberg has been superintendent of the Sunday school and was a Sunday school teacher and active choir member for many years. She is still active and finds her chief enjoyment in the various phases of church work. Mr. Sperberg,. too, has been an active church worker, taking great pleasure in playing the violin for special church functions as well as serving as an officer in various capacities.Mr. and Mrs. Sperberg have travelled extensively, having made a number of trips to the state of Washington, Canada, eastern United States and the world’s fair in Chicago.The couple have nine living children, 35 grandchildren, and 19 greatgrandchildren, The children are: Mrs. Jacob Staats, Manitowoc; Ru-dolps, Stambaugh, Michigan; Otto Sperberg and Mrs. Henry Thomas, Wausau; Mrs. Julius Buettner, Mrs. Ed Greub and Mrs. Will Schroeder, Shawano, Rt. 2; Mrs. Jay Tibbetts, Green Bay, and Mrs. Martha Christen of Van Zandt, Washington.The guests present were: Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Sperberg and daughters, Carol and Shirley, Stambaugh, Michigan; Mr. and Mra. William Mel-choirl, Iron River, Michigan; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Sperberg, Havana, Cuba; Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Staats and daughter, Priscilla, of Manitowoc; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Sperberg, daughter, Marie, and sons, ILeonard, Harold and Gordon, of Wausau; Miss Sabilla Holsum, Wausau; the Misses Irma and Angeline Sperberg and William Griffin, pf Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thomas, daughter, Mariya, and son, Lawrence, and Miss Zoe Rae Funk, of Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. J.
