What Our Country Girls Are Doing.Wildwood, July 17.—Miss ClaraMoon, 16-year-old daughter of J. D.Moon of Wildwood, took a bunch of sheep to the Cougar Flat settlement on some logged-off land for pasture early this spring.' Her corral, which she kept her sheep in at night, was. about 30 steps from the back door of her camp. She had been bothered with wild animals a little, but hadn’tlost but one lamb until July 12. Justas she and her seven-year-old sister were getting ready to retire for thenight one evening she was given the alarm by her small dog, that something was wrong. She glanced out of the window and caught sight ofsome animal slipping along up the road from the brush. She took therifle, shot at the animal twice, but not having any practice in shooting, she failed to hit the animal. She thoughtshe had frightened it away, butabout 11 o’clock she was awakened by the noise of a sheep bell. She grabbed the gun and ran to the backdoor. A cougar had mounted thecorral, taken a lamb, and hadleaped over the fence, and as helanded on the ground a young hound pup lying near the corral jumped upon the animal making him drop the lamb. This, however, turned thecougar straight toward the door where Miss Moon was standing, but the dogs finally chased it back to thewoods.Miss Moon then took her little sister and went to the nearest neighbor, Mr. Hogan, about three-quarters ot a mile. Mrs. Hogan came to the camp with the girl and Mr. Hogan went to get someone with dogs to kill the animal. While he was gone the cougar came back, but tfeey managed to drive him away before he got any ofthe sheep. They took the gun and with a flashlight guarded the sheep until nearly day, when getting chilly, they returned to the house.About 5 o’clock the animal returned for his prey. The girl emptied six more shells at him, but failed to hit it. When it was light enough to see they discovered that it was alarge cougar. Mr. Moon had gathereda bunch of dogs and started out on the hunt, but it was soon too dry to track the cougar and the chase had to be given up. Thisshows the worth of the country girl. She did far more than some mei w’ould do. If anyone has a good bearand varmint dog that they would like to get rid of Miss Moon would like very much to get it. ** i
