Lyla Sloat was recently assigned to the Mellette County-Todd County United Methodist Parishes, replacing Rev. Tom Peacock who ,is attending seminary college in Wyoming.Rev. Sloat describes herself as a “re-cycled homemaker, preacher’s wife, and workshop instructor for Sunday school teachers.” When asked what inspired her to become a minister, she replied, “I have had a commitment from age 13 to the Lord. I am a life-time Methodist. My husband, Rev. Orland Sloat, was completing his last year of seminary school when we were married.” The Rev. Orland Sloat is presently assigned to Bruce United Methodist and Volga Presbyterian Churchesnear Brookings, SD.The couple are the proud parents of two sons and two daughters. Philip, age 25, is a student at aGeorgia Theological Seminary and son Dayton, age 23, is also a theological Seminary student in California. Daughter Rachel, age 18, lives in Yankton, and youngest daughter Mary, age 16, will enroll as a sophomore at WRHS this fall.Lyla graduated from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1984Campus CornerDENVER, CO - Lois D. Antoine, Loretto Heights College in Denver, CO was recently selected as recipient of the Agnes Kragh Hearn Scholarship and Weckbaugh Scholarship for 1985-86. Lois received the scholarship due to her high academic standing and her involvement with numerous religious activities. She was also selected as aspeaker during Colorado’s Women’s History Week gathering in early March of this year.llpfemmmmMand was ordained as a Deacon at the SD Annual Conference on June 8,1985.This is her first full-time parish; however, she has previously held a position at Hazel, Kellerton, and Henry United Methodist Church near Watertown.She views the ministry as bringing a change agent in people’s lives and is looking forward to getting to know people in White River, Wood and Mission. She expressed gratitude for the team ministry of Rev. Tom Vos who is now retired in White Riverand serving the parish part time,and Rev. Erling Duus who is also part time to the parishes and parttime with the Rosebud Tree of LifeMinistry.Other services she offers through the United Methodist parishes include counseling, baptism and youth social groups.Along with ministerial interests, Lyla, as she requests everyone to address her, is an antique buff, gardening enthusiast, enjoys all forms of needle craft and thoroughly enjoys entertaining. Above all, she enjoysmotherhood and feels ths skill comes in handy also within her ministry.“I find this area beautiful in thereceptivenss of its people,” she said. “I love the rolling hills and the geographical aspect of the area is fascinating.
