KGRASSROOIS fii, OPINIONOhioans continue to use their libraries heavily, according to figures in the 1977 Ohio Directory of Libraries just published by the State Library of Ohio. The same can be said of Guernsey countians, as indicated by the annual report for 1976 issued by Miss Marjorie Harvey, head librarian of the Guernsey County Public Libra^ system. She said that despite the inconveniences and added workload associated with the remodeling and expansion of the main library building on Steubenville Ave., the circulation of books and audio visual materials last year totaled 91,622, or slightly more than in 1975. The system or district (embraces the entire county) had 73,450 volumes at the end of 1976. State-wide, more than 77 million books were said to be available in public libraries.Noted particularly is the increase in demand for audio visual materials—movie films, slides and transcribed records. Also there is a greater demand for reference materials, especially that in the Finley Room at the main library. The Finley Room is popular with genealogists and, according to Miss Harvey, not a day goes by without it being used to a considerable extent. The room contains valuable and to some extent irreplaceable books, and it is open to the public 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday.Because of the increased demand for reference and visual aid materials, the library board of trustees has asked the city for an appropriation of $10,370 to enable the library system to provide more of such materials.City council has taken a step to comply, having had one reading of a resolution to provide the money. Two more readings are necessary for passage. Similar help was given by the city in 1974.Miss Harvey said the growing demand for visual aid materials is noted in the increase in the number of requests for movie films and slides by various groups in the city and county—nursing homes, senior citizens, church organizations, etc.The State Library said most Ohio public libraries now have graduate professional librarians. The county system is fortunate to have two of them plus other capable staff members.
