* lt;lt;U x */£ att# !•'lt;OLD OAKLAND STATION BEING MOVED TO AUSTINOakland Depot Acquired Edith Moreyfor Fairgrounds Center Case LawyersA new attraction will be added to the ever-growing railroad center on the Mower County Fairgrounds this week. The de-jot at Oakland has been donated by the Chicago. Milwaukee, St. Paul Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road) and is scheduled to be moved intact to the center today or Thursday.The depot will house early railroad memorabilia such as early telegraph equipment, spi-toons, pot-bellied stove, ticketequipment, and express andpush carts in the baggage and waiting rooms.In addition to being a museum, the building will be used for meetings of the ruilroad fans and historical groups.Moving the depot will be quite an undertaking for both bridges and wires will post a problem. A portion of the baggage room has been removed from t h e depot, which will be renovated to cira 1900.Footings for the structure havebeen |Xurcd and the building will be located west of the train. A brick platform will be placed between the main line andthe depot. During the fair a station agent will be on duty to show visitors around one of the most complete rail centers in the state.Other attractions at the center which was recently named Milwaukee Junction, in honor of the Milwaukee Road’s many donations, include old 1004 and tender, Hormel refrigerator car, caboose, and hand cars.Incidentally, 1004 was one of the last steamers on the Milwaukee and it made history back in 1958 when it was steamed up in 20-lxdow weather and atmidnight the whistle was blasted 100 times in honor of Minnesota's centennial.The Oakland Depot was located on the Austin-Wessington Springs, S. D., branch and is about 85 years old. Closed for several years, Oakland is served from the Hayward station.Although not a ticket has been sold at Oakland for many years, the last passenger train (actually a mixed train went through last September.
