The Western Canoaian, Manitou, Manitoba -Tuesday, July 14, 2009Former Residents ‘‘Come Home” for Altamont 125th CelebrationsThe little town of Altemont swelled as former residents and their families returned for a homecoming weekend July 4th and 5th. Volunteers had been preparing for this weekend for over a year.Signs indicating past owners of homes and businesses were posted around the community Of special note, is the Altamont Hotel which has run continuously since 1927. From 1927 - 1930 William Pell, 1930-32 George Storey. 1932 - 41 Frank Courface. 1941 - 43 Alex Bourrier. 1943 - 46 Vera and Noah Cook. 1946 - 61 Charlie Jamault. 1961 - 64 Elizabeth Stadnyk, 1964 - 67 Florent Francis Smith, 1967 - 72 Steve Marie Konowalchuk, 1972 -76 Vic Bernice Oberick, 1976 • 82 Emile Ivy Desjar* laie, 1982 • 87 Guy Cathy Lafreniere, 1987 • present Emile Monique Grenier.A parade Saturday morn* mg had the Legion Color Guard leading the route, trailed by members of the Ro^ Canadian Legion Car* man Branch 18 in three army jeepe.There was a wide variety of entries throughout the forty minute parade, some of which included the Altamont Orche* etra, and Treherne Red Coats Band, restored antique farm equipment and care, (some of which had been in the family for years, like the Maseey combine purchased in 1947 by W. W. Orchard and has seen five generations), indi* vidual family entries • The Pi* rates of the Prairies (Lawson farms), the Madill Family, Turner Family Camp. The Vandendorpes, and The Andrews Fami^, horses, clowns, and Batman and Robin on a motorcycle with sidecar, asTables In the Altamont Hall were lined with old photos, clippings and other memorab^la which had former residents recalling old timesDon McEwan ond Margaret Thompson (eldest male one female residents of Altamont), olong with Blaine Pederser (MLAfcf Carman], and Aurele Pant^ (councillor for thr R M of Lome) participofed in the bat monument unveilini ceremony during Altomont's festivities The sign wa designed by Joanne Sullivan of Altamont, and crafted b the Odfel Senders familyThe Altamont Hotel hos operoted continuously since 1927well as entries from St. Leort, Somerset, St. Lupicin, and Deerwood,Many headed to the rink following the parade where everyone was kept fed, watered and entertained throughout the dayThe hall was set up with displays of archival picturesand school records, with much visiting and reminiscing going on.A bat monument, located on the main street across from the Altamont Hotel was unveiled during a brief ceremony.
