Flemke Wins Natl Race ! At Stafford, ' Although Jack Arute’s debut as sole promoter was delayed until next week because of the rain out a week ago of the big national points show at Stafford, both the new promoter and the former promoter, Mai Barlow, were happy with the financial aspect of Saturday’s racing card.Over 6,000 turned out towatch as “Steady Eddie”Flemke, one of the so-called Old Timers of modified stock car racing, took the lead on the 72nd lap and throttled his car to a rather convinving victory.Although Flemke’s victorywas rather easy, it was an interesting race. Bugsy Stevens, reigning national modified champion, held the lead for 14 laps before Freddie DeSarro, current national points leader, took over. On the 28th lap, Flemke moved into second ahead oi Stevens and behind DeSarro. There was a spinout on the 72nd lap which brought down the caution flag for a few laps and shortly afterwards, Flemke passed DeSarro to take the lead. While Flemke was making his move, so was second place finished Ed Cleary. Cleary jockeyed his way through the traffic to get second and Stevens got ahead of DeSarro to take third place. Ernie Gahan was fourth, Bobby Santos, fifth, Bemie Miller, sixth, Bill Harmon seventh and Fred Schulz, eighth. Windsor Locks’ Don Flynn was ninth.Ray Hendrick, winner of the first 100-lap national race at Stafford this year, was forced out of this one on the 35th lap with mechanical problems.Arute and Barlow made arrangements concerning the financial portion of the show, for it was to be run when Barlow was sole promoter last week and Arute was to take over this week. The show started but was rained out last week, making it necessary for an adjustment.
