Sandy Beach board hears complaints from Selectmen jLEE — The Sandy Beach Committee said last night that it would look into the possibility of adding a part-time lifeguard to its staff, adding a special policeman and adding crushed stone to the beach’s dirt parking lot.The committee met last night with the Selectmen to discuss complaints received by Selectman John J. Wheeler. Wheeler had charged last week that the beach was not kept up and that it was being used by out-of-state visitors.‘Excellent job’Moderator Henry M. Donahoe, who appoints the committee, told the Selectmen that he had inspected the beach and found it to be in good shape. He added that it was his opinion that the committee and the lifeguards had been doing an “excellent job at the beach ”His opinion was backed up by several beach-goers present at the meeting.Mrs. Jane DeFreest of 90 High St. and Mrs. Marian Wood at 51 Franklin St., who identified themselves as frequent users of Sandy Beach, lauded its condition and praised the lifeguards.“You won’t find a better beach in this area,” Mrs. Wood said.Agreeing with their favorable opinions was James V. Bianco of Pleasant Street.Cut feetThe charges by V/heeler were brought after his daughter cut her foot on glass at the beach and was not provided with aride home, though the cut was treated by the lifeguards. {Bernard Desautels, beach master, said he was derelict in not providing transportation. Last night he said that another girl had since cut her foot and that he called police, who took her home in a cruiser.Donahoe told the Selectmen that because of heavy rains, , grass at the beach’s picnic area has not been trimmed this year since a mower would sink into the moist soil. Wheeler had i complained about the condition 1 of the picnic area.James M. Shaw, chairman of ! the beach committee, said there was glass on the beach though * lifeguards and John Consolati, 1 in charge of upkeep, rake the ' sand daily. He said the glass ' comes from smashed wine bot- ( ties.Fisherman's bottles tBeach Committeeman Thomas 1 Cinella added that some of the i glass comes from ice fishermen J who drink bottled beverages in lt;the area during the winter. 1Shaw said that, though the lt;beach access is cordoned off by 4 a chain during offhours, it is a 1 simple matter for those who lt;wish to party at the beach to walk into the area or drive mo- lt;torcycles around the chain.The committee said it has re- 1 ceived no complaints on out-of- 1 state people using the area. Shaw said more partrolling by police is needed to stop misuse of the beach. JThe committee also discussed , the possibility of instituting a j card identification system to identify Lee residents.^
