Pearson Wins Grand Nat’l Before 10,000 At ThompsonThompson — Other than winner Dave Pearson and Richard Petty, who dropped out during the race, the field in the 200-lap Grand National feature at Thompson Speedway last night wasn't as impressive as it could have been.Many of the big names — most in fact — didn’t enter, and Bugsy Stevens and Ed Flemke, regular area runners, didn’t get rides in the race.Jim Hilton of Inman, S.C., placed second, far behind Pearson, and John Sears of Ellerbe.N.S., finished third.Pearson averaged 89.498 miles per hour and also had the fastest trial lap.About 10,000 were on hand for the big race, as Thompson officials had to turn people away.Pearson took over the leadwnen Petty left the race on the 95th lap with mechanical difficulties.
