Upened Eastport BridgeA heavy shower of rain, that drenched some spectators, servedto christen the new bridge over Spa creek, between Annapolis andfcastport at 8 A. M. today when the span was thrown open to traffic for the first time.Automobiles were lined up along Sixth street, at the Eastportend of the bridge, and along Gloucester street, at the Annapolisend, by 7:45 A, M. waiting for the opening. At that time thedouble leaf bascule type draw span of the new bridge was openedand the wooden barriers guarding the draw against traffic weredown County police from the Eastport substation were on duty at the Eastport side of the structure.Whistles, Horns BlowBetween 7:45 and 8 A. M. the draw of the new bridge was closed and opened several times in a final test. At 8 A. M. it remained closed, the barriers went up and John Strohm, assistant county engineer, on the Annapolis side, waved traffic over the bridge. Sgt. Brooke Meade, in a police car from the Eastport station, led till procession over the bridge from Eastport to Annapolis. John A, Bromley, county engineer, was present. . ^ •-Just as traffic started to move the xain began falling heavily. The whistle of a hugg crane, moored near the Annapolis end of bridge cut loose with a roar, and several other whistles were blown. The motorists streaming over the wide, smooth, highly arched roadway of the new bridge blew the horns on their cars.Some Just Drive OverWhile most of the motor traffic that passed over the new bridge was the regular flow that used to •cross the old span,'it was noticed that som? motorists had turned out to. look oyer the new structure.They drove over from Annapolis, circled around in Eastport, and returned to Annapolis. A, number ;o£ pedestrains walked across the bridge, stopping to inspect the draw and its equipment.Edward Norfolk, who was the drawtender on the old bridge, moved over to handle the draw of the new structure. William Bran-zeH, retired drawtender of the old bridge, who for about 30 years lived, in the little house at the draw of the abandoned structure, moved weeks ago to live with his son in Eastport, He took the little dog, known to hundreds of motorists, along with him.Buies tJsc BridgeThe Arundel hues, which had been making a circuit between Eastport and Annapolis by way of Spa road since the old bridge wasNOTIFIED OF WIFE’S DEATH BY (OAST GUARDMac Bresskin, of New York, whose wife died while he wasmaking a vacation cruise, was located last night and notified by the Coast Guard.Bresskin left Annapolis on the three masted schooner Edwin N. Maude which was between Tangier and ReedviUe in Virginia. When Mrs. Bresskin died suddenly in New York, state police asked local police to try and locate her husband and notify him to return home. Tha police sought the aid of pilots and watermen. The Coast Guard also was notified.A Coast Guard boat contacted the Maude at 8 o'clock last night, notified Bresskin and then took him ashore so he could take a train to New York. He had been to ill health and was making the cruise to recover his strength.JOSEPH T.
