Wood Turns Doicn Rrowns Contract, Joins MarinesWilliam J. WoodLENOX — William J. Wood, who recently turned down a contract with the St. Louis Browns, left yesterday for Parris Island, S.C.. to begin a three-year enlistment in the UJS. Marine Corps.The son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wood of Schermerhorn Park, Wood is the only youth ever to make four all-Berkshire baseball teams. He made All-Berkshire each of his four years at Lenox High and was a member of the school's Southern Berkshire champions during the 11 recent baseball season. e He was offered a contract two r Jw'eeks ago to.join the St. Louis ^iBrow'ns’ farm system but declined. sias he planned to enter the service.Wood also played basketball 9; three years at Lenox High and e starred in football last fall at •v Lenox Preparatory School. He had r the highest batting average on the Pittsfield American Legion baseball team which went to Wash-s- ington, DC., in 1951 and a mem-* ber of the Lenox High School basketball team which that year won «- the Western Massachusetts Small n School Tourney. Also in 1951, he s. won the Commercial Travelers’ Award for athletic proficiency.fj He was a member of several h class activities committees at n Lenox High and had a leading role Jin his senior class play last winter, x He was also a member of the a Stunt Club, yearbook staff and j served as assistant basketball coach during his senior year.The youth’s father has retired in Lenox after serving 30 years! in the U.S. Navy. His brother, I Fred Jr, Fred Jr., was recently discharged from the Army following service in Korea.
