RECEIVES HIGH PRAISEi*Rescue Squad Aids Burned SoldierBy HADLEY WILLIAMSONRobesonian Staff WriterRobeson County .Rescue Squad came in for high praise today from numerous individuals and groups who cooperated Monday night-to .get a badly burned soldier to a hospital for special treatmentThe operation was one of the most outstanding in Luimberton’s history, with close cooperation seldom seen in any community and the development suddenly of a closely-knit plan of . communications among Lumberton police, the Civil Aeronautics Authority and Robeson Rescue Squad:The mission accomplished themovement of the soldier from*Lumberton to Texas for specialtreatment of his injuries an a highway accident.Pfc. Leslie Vernon Rhoden. 20. of Fort Bragg was badly burned when his motorcycle and a truck were in collision in St. Pauls Sunday night and the motorcycle caught fire. He .was rushed to Robeson Memorial hospital and put under immediate emergency treatment.Dr. H. M. Baker, 'Jr., wanted special treatment for the boy and made arrangements with army authorities for his transfer t o Fort Sam Houston, Texas.A huge C-54 four-engine plane was dispatched from Texas here and upon receiving notification the plane was approaching, CAA operator Joe Crouse began arrang-; ing for landing, transport of the boy to the plane, and protective equipment at the dirport.Contacting police, he obtained their cars for lighting, but the rescue squad truck came through in the biggest way as it set up floodlights on the runway to guide the pilot in. Other cars marked another portion of the runway with their lights, as the CAA and police kept up constant contact by telephone and radio. tThe City of Lumberton has appropriated funds to match federal funds for lighting a runway but: the project has not been started).. iMeanwhile, the youth was being removed from the hospital to the I plane by Biggs ambulance, andrescue squad members had to find a way to get the boy into the plane from the ground, since the door was’ about 12 feet above theground.rThey went to American Houses and borrowed a hook - lift and placed the stretcher on this lift, where a full staff of medical attendants in the plane took him aboard.Fire Chief E. J. Glover, Sr., had a fire truck on the scene for both landing and takeoff in event of mishap.Other individuals pitched in withtheir efforts and the plane was back in Texas in seven hours and R.ioden began receiving special treatment.
