Pammell of Ames, President of the Board, And Others, Speak To Large Company At the Banquet Last Evening.Over eighty acres of the 160 which must be purchased and donated to the state if the Ledges are to be a state park, were subscribed for at the Ledges banquet in the I. O. O. F. hall Wednesday evening which was honor ed by the presence of three members of the State Board of Conservat on Many interested persons from Ames, Ferry, Madrid. Luther, and Ogden, as well as a large number of farmers in this vicinity attended.Assurances were again received from the state board of conservation during the course of the evening in which half the distance to the de sired goal was made, that as soon as the 160 acres had been pledged here the board would pass a resolution for the establishment of the Ledges as a state park and would plead the cause before the executive counc.T.A large map showing the acre tracts in the Ledges and colored to represent the area to be purchased by the state which is 460 acres, or three-fourths of the park, produced bv Chairman R. L. Cooper and as soon as Secretary Itoscoe Zerwekh of the Perry Bureau of Canuneiee, who de livered the final and “selling” talk of the evening had announced an acre as sold at the $100 price. Dr. L. H. The large company which had assembled for the dinner which was given by the Boone Chamber of Commerce were finally brought to the banquet hall where the excellent repast was enjoyed and the company assumed a genial frame of mind after singing some “Ledges” songs to popular air? composed by Chairman Cooper.The first speaker on the program was Fred W. Crary, president of the Ledges Association, who told how the committee named last fall had secured the options on the Ledges land and were ready to get the park ! as soon as the land was bought.McHose For Project.President J. B. McHose of the Daniel Boone Trail then told those present that the park was for the benefit of the working man and asked the assembly “will you not take up the challenge and make this county, this j state, a better place to live in?”| Hon. J. F. Ford of Fort Dodge, the ! only member of the board who w'as ; present at this time, was called on for remarks and told how progressiveness in public men is not only unappreciated but even denounced. He told howr the beauty spots of j Iowa are gradually being robbed of their forestation. He pointed out the fortunate situation of Boone county in this respect for like his own county, Webster, the speaker said it had in the Ledges one of the few places in the state where conditions wrere now as they were 50 years ago wThenthem. He informed the banqueters that the Ledges were really a botanical “island” where plant life had been stranded during the glacial period and because of this fact they were highly desirable localities to be saved from a scientific standpoint.Secretary E. R. Harlan told of the necessity for quick action by the people of this vicinity if the Ledges were to be established as a state park. The funds of the board are limited, he said, and many communities have projects which they are willing to turn over to the board in u way that their cost and upkeep wou’d not be a great burden on that body.Secretary Zerwekh took charge of the meeting following Secretary Harlan’s address and the cards were passed to all present. C. C. Quinn. J. H. Goeppinger and T. E. Means were named table chairmen to get the subscriptions from their respective tables and the campaign was started. The farmers in the vicinity announced that they had agreed to take 15 3-20 acres and in a short time the amount had been raised to over 80.NEWS MEN GET RIDE DURING ESSEX DAYKeep Tab on the Machine Which Ran 24 Hours Without Stopping the Motor.The desirable automobile qualities which advertisements writers depict for their various brands were all demonstrated for the newspaper men of the city Tuesday and Wednesday dur ing the 24 hour non stop run by an Essex car which was staged here by the Crary Motor and Implement Co., in celebration of Essex week.The newspaper men were the record keepers tor the run and kept tab on the number of stops and starts j made by the mar’ii.-.e. The car was, decorated with a number of signs attracted considerable attention as it wended its way through the streets , of the city during its all day and ,-afT night run. Many took advantage of the sign reading “Free Ride and tested the machine to their own satisfaction.The motor wao started at noon Tuesday and the run ended at noon Wednesday.
