New Science Building At California Is ReadyBy S. M. HOUSeAlthough some finishing touches remain to be done to the now Science BIdg. at the California State College, President Michael Duda ordered (ho new building to be placed in service at the opening of the final semester of the current school year this week.Originally it was planned to have the building completed next April, but work progressed so auspiciously that jt was decided to place the much-needed structure in service months ahead of the original plan.The new building is a welcome addition to the campus. It contains 10 classrooms, io laboratories, 10 offices, a radio room, a room for the teaching of mechanical subjects, an animal room, a dark room to he used in connection with classes in photography and a variety of s t o r a g e rooms.Ultra-modern In design, much of the exterior wall space is glassed in, affording an extraordinary amount, of natural lighting.Unusual interior features include an elevated physics lecture room, gracefully designed aluminum entrance doors and modish fluorescent lighting.It is planned eventually to have quarters atop Ihe building in which to house a telescope for useof classes In astronomy and kindred subjects.Interior decoration has been carried out not alone for beauty but also wilh consideration for the psychological values of adornment. Green is the basic interior color, although liberal sprinklings of yellow, orange and pink are evident in the various rooms.The walls are plaster with texture d sand finish. Both ceramic and acoustic tile have been used in the main hallway to muffle the customary din of class changes.The spaciousness of the new Science hall is Indicated by the fact that it is expected to accomodate some 25 per cent of the school population which Is nowcrowding the 2.000 mark.With the advent of spring, landscaping of the campus around the new building is planned with the work in charge of a student committee soon to be chosen by the Student Congress.
