B. Gbbons Camp Confederate Veterans and the Board of Supervisors from General J. Tompson Brown, Division Commander of the United Confederate Veterans, asking for co-operation in the task of securing the attendance of every veteran of the^War between the States at the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg.In accordance with an act of the l*Bt legislature of Virginia, the Supervisors at their meeting on February 13th, will be asked to appprori-ate money to defray the expenses of all veterans in the county who desire to attend the anniversary celebration. The special act is as follows:* *Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia that the Board of Supervisors of the several counties of the State of Virginia are hereby authorized to appropriate money to defray the expenses of such indigentConfederate veterans of the said counties desiring to attend the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, to be held at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th of July, 1913.The act was approved on March 14th, 1912, and should the Board of Supervisors act favorably it is expected that quite a number of veterans from Harrisonburg and Rockingham will attend the celebration. It is hoped to have every Virginia veteran present. Not only will the anniversary be observed at that time and the peace monument unveiled, but the monument which Virginia is preparing in memory of her soldiers who took part in the battle will be partly ready for unveiling and frill be made one of the events of the occa-1ilt;t1i(I1IiIG*1C1ct\VaafctfaIcsLtsn8Pt!sion.A,8eesThe number of surviving Confederate veterans in Virginia is estimatedat from 8,000 to 10,000, and Rockingham county has a goodly proportion of them. How many can afford to pay their own way to Gettysburg is problematical.Local camps and chapters are expected to see the Supervisors and secure money from them.It is only necessary to secure funds for railroad fare. The United States government, through the War Department, will furnish the camp facilities, including tents and water supply. The State of Pennsylvania, which has put up $200,000 for the celebration,will supply the necessary things to eat. Railroad rates will be reduced for the occasion.
